WISE was supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in enhancing the capacity of state nodal agencies in mainstreaming renewables. The state nodal agencies from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh were targeted and a customized training programme was held in May 2010 in Pune for senior officials from these SNAs. As part of the training, WISE prepared a roadmap and detailed report on the potential and need of institutional strengthening of the SNAs.

The programme’s inaugural session had senior representatives from both MNRE and USAID including Dr. P C Pant, Director, MNRE; Dr. Gaurav Bhatiani, Principal Energy Specialist, USAID India; Rakesh Kumar Goyal, Chief of Party, DRUM, and PA Consulting group.

The programme comprised sessions on topics such as the role of SNAs in promoting regulatory matters, the need to develop human resources for accelerated RE uptake, innovative methods for financial management of SNAs, maximizing the use of publicity tools to ensure RE development, etc. Some of the key points emerging from the feedback on the report were incorporated in the final report recommendations made to MNRE and USAID. Also, separate reports for the six SNAs were submitted to USAID, MNRE, and the heads of the respective SNAs. Subsequently, many SNAs implemented WISE’s recommendations with a view to enhancing the quality of their functioning.
