WISE organized the first-of-its-kind conference on climate change, ‘Climate Change India 2008’, on 22-23 April 2008 at Le Meridien, Pune.
Eminent environmentalist, Dr. Vandana Shiva, Founder, Navdanya, inaugurated the conference in the presence of Ajai Vikram Singh, IAS (Retd.), Former Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Chairman of the Climate Advisory Council of WISE, and G M Pillai, Founder Director General, WISE. One of the highlights of the conference was a panel discussion on the theme paper ‘Way Forward to realise New Policies’ prepared by WISE. The panellists comprised Dr. Vandana Shiva; Dr. Pramod Deo, Chairman, CERC; V Subramanian, Secretary, MNRE and Prof. Sudhir Chellarajan, Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Madras. The panellists were highly supportive of the recommended policy measures and actions proposed in the theme document and appreciated the efforts taken by WISE to work on positive policy actions in the climate change space. WISE also felicitated six eminent IPCC report authors for their contribution in preparing the IPCC report.
The conference was attended by over 100 delegates that included an eclectic mix of researchers, academicians, policy makers, industry chieftains, renewable energy industry representatives, finance and insurance sector professionals, and social activists. The conference received widespread media coverage both in national and local newspapers.
